Darrell Berry
Darrell Berry is a social media researcher/software developer/writer/photographer.
Darrell started his career as a designer of educational software for children. On moving to Japan from Australia in the early 1990s he worked as a journalist for controls technology giant Yamatake-Honeywell. He started writing about and developing technologies for social media after hustling the first private dial-up internet connection in Tokyo. As a member of the Tokyo-based Vision Network hacker/artist collective, he created Matisse -- the first massively multiuser social media platform for the Apple Mac.
On returning to London in 1995, he was appointed CIO and Partner of Campaign's Agency of the Decade, HHCL + Partners. In 1999, he created howellhenryland -- probably the first social media-centric corporate website.
Since 2005 Darrell has been mapping online communities using his proprietary technology and consulting for clients as diverse as SABMiller, Sony PlayStation, Britvic and the UK Ministry of Defence. He is currently working on social media projects for Chime Communications and Hall and Partners. He has also worked pro-bono with thinktank Demos on TED's XDR-TB awareness project.
Recent speaking engagements have included the 2008 Shots Forum on The Future of Advertising. At ad:tech 2008, Darrell presented an online advocacy masterclass with O2.
Darrell co-edits and writes for emergent culture webzine BigShinyThing. Darrell's photography has featured in A Magazine Curated by Riccardo Tisci, Time Out, PonyStep, and The Urban Cookbook. He has just been named one of Time Out London's top nightlife photographers.
